“Republicans are about to make a mistake on health care and betray a promise” – ICYMI: Republican Lawmakers Continue Sounding the Alarm on Senate’s Medicaid Cuts

Senate’s bill cuts $1 trillion from health care, causes over 11 million Americans to lose their health care

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) – “Now Republicans are about to make a mistake on health care and betray a promise. It is inescapable this bill will betray the promise Donald Trump made…I’m telling the President that you have been misinformed. You supporting the Senate mark will hurt people who are eligible and qualified for Medicaid.”

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) – “It would result in tens of billions of dollars in lost funding for North Carolina, including our hospitals and rural communities…This will force the state to make painful decisions like eliminating Medicaid coverage for hundreds of thousands in the expansion population, and even reducing critical services for those in the traditional Medicaid population.”

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) – “This has been an unhappy episode here in Congress, this effort to cut Medicaid. And I think, frankly, my party needs to do some soul-searching.”

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) – “I want to be clear, though, that the future Medicaid cuts are terrible.”

Rep. David Valadao (R-CA) – “I will not support a final bill that eliminates vital funding streams our hospitals rely on, including provider taxes and state directed payments, or any provisions that punish expansion states…President Trump was clear when he said to root out waste, fraud, and abuse without cutting Medicaid…I urge my Senate colleagues to stick to the Medicaid provisions in H.R. 1 – otherwise, I will vote no.”

Rep. Young Kim (R-CA) – “I will continue to make clear that a budget resolution that does not protect vital Medicaid services for the most vulnerable…will not receive my vote.”

Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-AZ), Rep. Rob Bresnahan (R-PA), Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-NC), Rep. Andrew Gabarino (R-NY), Rep. David Valadadao (R-CA), Rep. Young Kim (R-CA), Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-VA), Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ), Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA), Rep. Zach Nunn (IA), Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA), Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA), Rep. Jeff Hude (R-CO) – “We believe it is essential that the final reconciliation bill reflects the priorities of our constituents—most importantly, the critical need to protect Medicaid and the hospitals that serve our communities…The proposal released by the Senate Finance Committee on June 16 includes provisions that go beyond H.R. 1. The House’s approach reflects a more pragmatic and compassionate standard, and we urge that it be retained in the final bill. The Senate proposal also undermines the balanced approach taken to craft the Medicaid provisions in H.R. 1—particularly regarding provider taxes and state directed payments…Protecting Medicaid is essential for the vulnerable constituents we were elected to represent. Therefore, we cannot support a final bill that threatens access to coverage or jeopardizes the stability of our hospitals and providers.”
