Institutional Members of the FAH are the nation’s leading investor-owned hospitals and health systems, which offer traditional acute care, ambulatory care, psychiatric care, long-term acute care, rehabilitative care, and skilled nursing facility care, among other services. Membership criteria for Institutional Members include accreditation by The Joint Commission (TJC) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or by Medicare or Medicaid certification, and duly licensed to operate in the state in which it is located. Currently, investor-owned hospitals represent about 15 percent of all hospitals in the United States.

Affiliate Members are health care organizations, companies, or groups that share the Federation of American Hospitals' philosophies of delivering high quality health care at competitive prices through the free enterprise system. The "affiliate" category is a "by invitation" category for leading health care companies that share the FAH philosophies and goals.

The FAH Associate Members include hospital associations, medical societies, law firms and foundations; suppliers other than management companies, of services and/or products to the health care industry; and management companies that do not own or manage hospitals, but instead have contracts limited to certain functions, services, or areas of the hospital.

Additionally, an Individual Student Member is a student enrolled in a course in hospital administration or other career study in the health care industry.
